North Richmond provides activities for children and youth, ages 6 to 17, during the critical hours of 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., when youth are most likely to get into trouble. Not only do these activities provide a safe place for children, but they also enhance children's academic skills.
Homework assistance is provided, and a computer lab is available for students' use. Students may bring homework from school or request help with specific academic skills. The computer lab is equipped with educational software and has Internet access. It is geared toward improving academic abilities and providing basic computer literacy as well as keyboarding skills.
Each year, North Richmond collaborates with the City of Richmond's Shields-Reid Community Center to offer a summer day camp to approximately 150 Richmond children between the ages of 6 and 12. Activities include organized sports, group games, cooking, arts and crafts, music and dance classes, and field trips. On a smaller scale, a winter camp is offered during the December school holidays.
North Richmond offers positive alternatives for youth through Teens Wiping Away Stereotypes (TWAS). TWAS is peer led and engages teens in their community, city, and state in order to build partnerships in support of youth. The program provides a healthy, safe, fun, and supportive environment for youth. By combining community service, youth collaboration, and academic achievement, the program helps youth see themselves as an integral part of society.
