The Center for Human Development has provided community support to San Francisco youth since 1980. Our program, Youth Striving for Excellence, is based on a youth development approach to preventing substance abuse and on building supportive individual relationships with the young people we serve. Our school-based program is designed to develop students’ strengths, nurture resiliency, and encourage the development of skills that help students make positive choices in their lives. We facilitate substance abuse prevention education curricula and help youth to develop life skills that will expand their employment and personal growth options.
Youth Striving for Excellence (YSE) brings young adults and community members into the County Community Schools to work with adjudicated youth removed from regular San Francisco Unified School District Schools and placed in alternative programs. A substance use and violence prevention curriculum is used to run interactive workshops with youth. Support groups follow up the workshops to allow youth to discuss more personal issues and process new information.
YSE is offered at a number of High Schools including Galileo, ISA, June Jordan, Lincoln, Marshall, Mission, John O’Connell.
